An inquiry into what truly lies behind the profound influence of the American West and the “local color” school of American fiction on what is more usually thought of as a quintessentially Irish work. It turns out that “The Dead,” which T.S. Eliot described as “one of the greatest short stories ever written” is haunted by some unlikely ghosts.
